It was supposed to snow in New York. But the power of the planned Thyagaraja Aradhana was such that the snow stopped at the fringe of our area, and there was not a flake in sight at Glen Oaks, where the First Thyagaraja Aradhana organized by Shruti Laya was taking place.
The afternoon started with the group singing of the invocatory Sree Ganapathini followed by the Pancharatna Krithis - the five gems of Thyagaraja. Many area teachers and their students joined in this homage to the Saint composer. There were also two violins and three mridangams to accompany the singers. The majestic krithis flowed flawlessly and were a treat to hear. It was also heartening to note the number of students on the stage, who sang along with the teachers.
This was followed by three concerts of Thyagaraja songs. Smt. Shobana Raghavan, Smt. Meena Malladi and Smt. Saavitri Ramanand kept the audience enthralled for a full three hours following the pancharatna krithi singing. Sri.A.R.Balaskandan accompanied on the violin, Sri. Murali Balachandran on the mridangam and Sri.Balaganesh on the morsing provided the perfect support for these artists, enhancing the presentation with their passionate playing.
Shruti Laya wishes to thank all the students and artists who participated in the group singing and the rasikas who came to enjoy and encourage this all local production. With your support, we hope this tradition will continue and grow in the coming years. Thanks also to all the volunteers, esp. Subu Garikapati, Ashok Chintakunta and many others who helped with the arrangements.
